The Akinox platform to transform the coordination of personalized services for patients with chronic pain, thanks to artificial intelligence and predictive algorithms.

One in three Canadians above the age of 65 live with chronic pain, just a little lower than the global rate of 20%. The McGill University Health Centre, with funding from the Minister of Health and Social Services of Québec, is starting a research project for a comprehensive and cohesive learning health system with the use of Akinox’ modern digital technology.

The project, entitled “A Learning Health System for Chronic Pain Management: A Digital Platform with a Network Perspective”, will take place over a large geographic area, including the McGill University Health Center (MUHC), the IUCHSS (Integrated University Center for Health and Social Services) of Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, Centre-Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, and Ouest-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, and the IHSSC (Integrated Health and Social Services Center) of Montérégie-Ouest and Outaouais.

Chronic pain management is a delicate process requiring continuity of follow-up supported by the constant sharing of data between the various care providers. However, in Québec, the fragmentation of health services, the lack of coordination of care and services, and the poor quality in terms of sharing the collection and management of information, negatively affect the quality of care received. The situation is aggravated by the difficulty in accessing electronic medical record data in the primary care and social services sectors; moreover, clinical information does not follow the patient, which makes coordination and integration of care difficult. The lack of clinical and administrative indicators allowing comparative studies and the evaluation of the effects of chronic pain management programs limits the evolution of the field. These gaps translate into limited accessibility and a fracture in the continuity of the services offered, as well as a reduction in the quality of the response to the needs of people suffering from chronic pain.

The McGill RUIS (Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé) Center for Expertise in Chronic Pain Management (CEGDC) in collaboration with its partners (users, IUCHSS, IHSSC, and the Ministry of Health and Social Services) is developing an organizational model for care which includes a strong and consolidated interdisciplinary first line, supported by corridors of service towards secondary and tertiary levels of care. The CEGDC would like to set up a learning health system in the chronic pain network using the Akinox digital platform. This system would define itself as a solution for the coordination of care and services based on the implementation of clinical trajectories enabling continuous patient management along the continuum of service. The main goal is to offer a transversal coordination of care and services to patients with the objective of ensuring clinical information continuity in real time between the various stakeholders of the interdisciplinary teams and between the different points of service, in order to provide care personalized to patients. This project also aims to allow patients to use the digital platform for self-care and to reduce consultations in the public health system.

Akinox would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ministry of Economy and Innovation of Québec for its financial assistance and the Ministry of Health and Social Services, via the Office of Innovation in Health and Social Services, strategic partner of the project.
